관계대명사 what이 만드는 관용어구들 (what 관용표현)

1.  what someone be (what one is) : 사람의 인격, 인물, 본질 등을 나타낸다. 
2.  A is to B what C is to D : A와 B의 관계는 C와 D의 관계와 같다.
3.  what is + 비교급 : 더욱 ~ 한것은 
4.  what we(you, they) call = what is called = so-called : 소위, 이른바
5.  what little money that (=all the little money that) : 얼마 안 되는 돈이지만
6.  and what not = or what not : 이것저것, 뭐니뭐니, 기타 등등
7.  what with A and (what with) B = partly because of A and partly because of B : 한편으로는 A때문에, 그리고 다른 한편으로는 B때문에

 

1. what someone be (what one is) 

: 사람의 인격, 인물, 본질 등을 나타낸다. 

what he was = what he used to be = the man which he was = the man which he used to be

 

• She had mede me what I am. : 그녀가 현재의 나를 만들었다.
• He is not what he used to be. : 그는 과거의 그가 아니다.

 

 2.  A is to B what C is to D 

: A와 B의 관계는 C와 D의 관계와 같다.

• Reading is to the mind what food is to the body. : 독서와 정신의 관계는 음식과 육체의 관계와 같다.

 

3.  what is + 비교급

: 더욱 ~ 한것은 

• He is honest and, what is better, very deligent. : 그는 정직한데, 더욱 좋은 점은 부지런하다는 것이다.

 

4. what we(you, they) call = what is called = so-called

: 소위, 이른바

• He belongs to what we call the "upstarts". : 그는 소위 벼락출세한 사람에 속한다.

*upstarts: 벼락출세한 사람, 건방진 놈

 

 

5.  what little money that (=all the little money that)

: 얼마 안되는 돈이지만.

• He saves what little money he earns. = 그는 비록 몇 푼 안 되는 돈이지만 버는 돈을 모두 저축한다.

여기서 what이 모든의 의미를 가짐.

 

6.  and what not = or what not

: 이것저것, 뭐니뭐니, 기타 등등

• I brought with me a kinife, a can opener, a magnifying glass, and what not. : 나는 칼, 깡통 따개, 확대경 따위를 몸에 지녀 가져왔다.

주로 문장 끝에 더해줘서 '뭐 그런 것들.'의 느낌을 줌

 

7.  what with A and (what with) B = partly because of A and partly because of B

 : 한편으로는 A때문에, 그리고 다른 한편으로는 B때문에

• What with fatigue and (what with) hunger, he fell down. : 한편으로는 피로 때문에, 그리고 다른 한편으로는 배고픔 때문에 그는 쓰러졌다.
