동명사의 관용적 용법들 (1)

1. There is no ~ing : ~하는 것은 불가능하다.
There is no knowing when he will arrive.
=It is impossible to know when he will arrive.
그가 언제 도착할 지 알 길이 없다.
2. It is no use~ing : ~해도 소용 없다.
It is no use trying to fight against God.
=There is no use trying to fight against God.
=It is of no use to try to fight against God.
=It is useless to try to fighy against God.
신에게 대항해 봤자 소용없는 일이다.
3. cannot help ~ing : ~하지 않을 수 없다.
She cannot help being late this morning.
=She cannot but be late this morning.
=She cannot choose but be late this morning.
=She cannot help but be late this morning.
=She has no choice but to be late this morning.
그녀는 오늘 아침에 늦지 않을 수 없었다.
4. It goes without saying that~ : ~는 말할 필요도 없다.
It goes without saying that honesty is the best policy.
=It is needless to say that honesty is the best policy.
정직이 최선의 방책이라는 것은 말할 필요도 없다.
5. make a point of ~ing : ~하는 것을 규칙으로 삼다. 규칙적으로 ~하다.
He makes a poing of taking a walk every morning.
=He makes it a rule to take a walk every morning.
그는 매일 아침에 산책하는 것을 규칙으로 삼는다. (규칙적으로 산책한다.)
